More Kitsch for a Mid-Century Christmas

Standard

Sorry for this post-holiday entry; life seemed to get in the way this holiday season and spare time was not something I had much of.

There are a just a few new kitschy Christmas things that were added to the ranch this year. Although I am trying to take a more “sparse” approach to decorating, I am obviously unable to follow through.

This vintage Continental aluminum “pom pom” style wall tree found a place of honor in my kitchen. It was made by Metal Trees Corporation in Chicago in the early 60’s. I got it for a great price on eBay in October. It seems this company also made a plain style (non pom pom) wall hung tree that was called the “Holiday”.

I also purchased another aluminum tree from a local resale shop at a price I could not turn down. It is a 7 foot fountain style. It came without the original box, so I am unsure of the brand. I decided to use it this year in my basement rumpus room instead of the pom pom one I had been using. I trimmed it with (mostly) plastic Jewel Brite and Bradford ornaments. The light up Santa head behind the tree is also new this year.

This newly acquired light up lantern was also used in the basement.

101_7491For the holidays it replaced this old AMI jukebox speaker we picked up last summer at a garage sale.

I think I have finally completed my collection of Firestone albums that were released in the 1960’s. Here are 5 of them.

There are also a few new Christmas albums this year to display in the living room.

101_7478We are still using the gold aluminum/ white vinyl tree in the living room. I found out (through a very helpful gentleman in a Christmas facebook group) that it is called a Gold Queen Star and was made by the Stainless Metal Craft Inc. in Chicago.

Here are a few of my favorite ornaments on that sparkly gold beauty:

The little felt Santa band ornaments were from a kit in the 60’s.

I picked up some great retro wrapping paper this year. I have to admit that wrapping is one of my favorite things about Christmas. Oh, and the food.

This little display was in my hall bath. I have had that Smiling Santa soap box set forever.

101_7482Check back soon for more updates here at the ranch. We have some projects on the horizon for the basement and the original tiled hall bath. As with any retro renovation project, it will probably won’t be simple. But I am up to the task!

Happy New Year!

Christmas Decorating Mid-Century Style

Standard

Sorry I am late showing you my Christmas decor this year. Our reno was finished just a few weeks ago.  We got the 3/4 bath completed just in time for a mid-mod party we hosted the weekend before Christmas.

We do have a few new Kitschmas things this year!

I purchased this vintage aluminum/ vinyl tree last summer for $8 at a garage sale. The original stand and box were both missing. I was told it belonged to the sellers grandmother. I had planned to sell in my Etsy shop.

Come Christmas, I loved it too much to let it go. I think it looks fab in our living room. That new color wheel is from Vermont Country Store. I purchased an LED floodlight for it and now it would light up a runway.

I have searched and searched trying to find information on that gold and white tree without much success. I was told it is probably Canadian.

Here is our living room lit up the evening:

And the kitchen:

I also have some new Christmas LP’s framed. I was given many of these for free at a garage sale a few months ago. The seller just wanted to get rid of all of her record albums and cases and told me to take as many as I wanted!

I was also able to find a slender 6 foot aluminum tree for my new kitchen this year. I got it on eBay; I was the only bidder! It fits perfect near the sliders.

These candy dishes were thrift store finds.  I love the Holt Howard one.

Here are a few displays in our new retro kitchen. The aqua and coral bottle brush trees are new from Target. The Christmas Pyrex promotional casserole was also a thrift store find.

We recently purchased a Silvertone Hi-Fi for the living room. Here it is ready to play some vintage Christmas tunes.

We still have a large aluminum tree in the basement family room.

This shelf has bounced around a bit; it ended up in the entry this year, loaded with smalls.

Now it’s time to take it all down, quit eating chocolate and hit the gym.

Hope you are all having a Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas (and my latest Kitschmas find)

Standard

Just a quick  note  from here on Croydon Place to wish you all a very Merry Christmas.

Starting today things get pretty hectic for us, as I am sure is the same for all of you.  Parties, church, concerts, gifts, food and maybe too much “Making Merry” 🙂

Here is a little gem I picked up last week at a resale shop near me. The original cord and light are missing and I will be replacing those (as soon as every single store in my town re-stocks them).

It is a mid-century Poloron Vacucel fireplace.  It is fairly large; 31 inches wide. From what I have been able to find online, it was possibly a store display piece. It is a little rough. Does anyone know how I may be able to touch up the scratches on this?

Poloron also made Christmas tree stands, blow mold holiday decor and picnic thermoses  and coolers. You may remember the aqua metal Poloron tree stand I featured in an earlier Christmas post.

This fireplace  will have a place of honor in our basement family room, not far from the aluminum tree.

Happy Holidays to all!
