Summer Lovin’

Standard

Well not really. Those who know me well know summer is NOT my favorite season. Especially here where it is hot and humid much of the time. I spend a small fortune on annual flowers for my patio and then by July they are frazzled and begging for shade.

I have to admit that my garden loves the weather this year. We are giving away tomatoes and peppers because we have so many.  This poor guy is a misfit. He kind of looks like Mr. Magoo.

I still thrift when I can and add to my stash of kitschy finds.

I am still buying bed linens, too. I know I need a 12 step program.

I have found a new love this summer: cold brew coffee! It is great for a hot day when you need a pick-me-up but you don’t want a hot drink. Insert a tropical stirrer and you are in business.

101_6263My Pyrex collection continues to grow; these are some of my fall pieces. I use them for everything from salads to casseroles to scrambling eggs. They also look great with fresh fruit or veggies on the counter.

I have been frantically getting my Christmas hoard listed in my Etsy shop for the upcoming holiday season. Remember all this?

101_5244.101_5245

101_5242Well head on over to my Etsy shop. Much of it is listed there!

Heck before we know it we will be putting up the Christmas decorations.

Springtime, Thrifting and a New Goodwill Store

Standard

You have probably heard me mention before (more times than you can count) that thrifting is not very good in my area. We had to travel a few hours to find a good-sized thrift store, Re-Store or Goodwill. This all changed several weeks ago when a Goodwill popped up in my town!

I have made many stops there on my errand days and found plenty of things I probably did not need. But this I did need:

After remodeling our mid-century kitchen I purchased an aqua blue stand mixer. In doing so, I had to get rid of my old one, which included a blender and salad attachment. That left me without a blender. This one will work just fine! Shiny chrome with aqua accents.

I also can’t pass up vintage bedding and atomic drink glasses.

or Tiki items

101_5580And groovy chip bowls

101_5581

I recently won this lamp on a local online auction page. For $30! It looks great in our living room.

101_5419

I got these atomic fish glasses from the same auction.

101_5385

I am blessed to have a friend who also “vintage” shops for me. She found me all of this at a church rummage sale:

101_5773I am keeping the “Flintstone” glasses (I have the matching pitcher) and the atomic pilsner glasses. The rest are for sale in my Etsy shop.

You all know I am addicted to cook books. This lot was from a big indoor garage sale I attended earlier this spring. I kept a few to round out my collection and the rest are up for sale.

101_5542

I also acquired more vintage and retro bedding. Cause I can never have enough. The duvet cover and shams are IKEA. I think they look great mixed in with my older pieces.

101_5782

After an epic FAIL baking a bunny shaped cake with a mold this Easter, I got smart and decided I would go back to making the bunny with 2 round cake pans like my mother taught me. Blue Heaven is one of my favorite patterns. I got these on Etsy.

101_5815

Here is a little springtime display. The pastel baskets belonged to my mother. I remember her using them for showers and Bunco games. They always held pastel mints and mixed nuts.

101_5741

This cool pie plate was an online purchase. It just happens to fit the old hairpin leg stand I had lying around. I love it displayed with the old winter themed tray in my kitchen.

101_5386This Lane Basket Weave sideboard was a bargain I could not pass up. It now sits in my Tiki inspired bedroom waiting for me to fill it up. I have early 60’s Lane Acclaim bedroom furniture and I think it looks great with those pieces.

Check back soon to see the new mid mod front door we have installed.

As soon as it is painted I will be posting photos. Still deciding on color: aqua or mint green?

Linen Love

When does a passion become an addiction you say? Heck if I know. I am pretty sure I have crossed over the line. Sign me up for a recovery program.

I have always collected vintage tablecloths, aprons, curtains and fabrics. Most windows in my home are covered with vintage or reproduction bark cloth. My kitchen table sports a never-ending supply of colorful vintage tablecloths in fun prints.

I even have a vintage laundry bag. They are great to stick in your suitcase and corral dirty clothes while you are on vacation.

101_4706

But this new obsession with vintage bedding is a recent problem that started off kind of innocently.  A few months back I decided that I wanted new (but vintage-y) bedspreads for our master bedroom and guest room. I jumped on Etsy and found 2 NOS Bates bedspreads.

The guest room search yielded a simple turquoise and very dark brown (almost black) plaid. This room is painted turquoise and the window valances are an atomic/ Tiki inspired bark cloth in brown, black, aqua, pink and maize. This simple bedspread would fit the bill and allow me to go a little crazy on sheets and pillowcases.

101_4705

My master bedroom is painted Caribbean Coral and the curtains are an atomic bark cloth in brown, orange, green, gold and black. I decided that “earth tones” bedding would go great with those. My problem (or so I thought) was going be to finding vintage bedding to match. Boy was I wrong! Groovy florals. Mod geometrics. Atomic stars. I was having a ball!

After several weeks of online and thrift store buying, I have enough sheets, blankets, pillowcases and throw pillows to mix and match for several months and never repeat the same look twice. A good problem to have, no?

I will show you a little of my haul.

101_3908

I love the geometric top sheet and pillowcases. They remind me of the Flintstones!

Here is the Bates bedspread I found in earth tones.

The starburst top sheet below is just too cool. I also purchased one in another colorway for the guest room.

101_4268

I guess I just like to have plenty of “choices”.
