Springtime, Thrifting and a New Goodwill Store

Standard

You have probably heard me mention before (more times than you can count) that thrifting is not very good in my area. We had to travel a few hours to find a good-sized thrift store, Re-Store or Goodwill. This all changed several weeks ago when a Goodwill popped up in my town!

I have made many stops there on my errand days and found plenty of things I probably did not need. But this I did need:

After remodeling our mid-century kitchen I purchased an aqua blue stand mixer. In doing so, I had to get rid of my old one, which included a blender and salad attachment. That left me without a blender. This one will work just fine! Shiny chrome with aqua accents.

I also can’t pass up vintage bedding and atomic drink glasses.

or Tiki items

101_5580And groovy chip bowls

101_5581

I recently won this lamp on a local online auction page. For $30! It looks great in our living room.

101_5419

I got these atomic fish glasses from the same auction.

101_5385

I am blessed to have a friend who also “vintage” shops for me. She found me all of this at a church rummage sale:

101_5773I am keeping the “Flintstone” glasses (I have the matching pitcher) and the atomic pilsner glasses. The rest are for sale in my Etsy shop.

You all know I am addicted to cook books. This lot was from a big indoor garage sale I attended earlier this spring. I kept a few to round out my collection and the rest are up for sale.

I also acquired more vintage and retro bedding. Cause I can never have enough. The duvet cover and shams are IKEA. I think they look great mixed in with my older pieces.

101_5782

After an epic FAIL baking a bunny shaped cake with a mold this Easter, I got smart and decided I would go back to making the bunny with 2 round cake pans like my mother taught me. Blue Heaven is one of my favorite patterns. I got these on Etsy.

101_5815

Here is a little springtime display. The pastel baskets belonged to my mother. I remember her using them for showers and Bunco games. They always held pastel mints and mixed nuts.

101_5741

This cool pie plate was an online purchase. It just happens to fit the old hairpin leg stand I had lying around. I love it displayed with the old winter themed tray in my kitchen.

101_5386This Lane Basket Weave sideboard was a bargain I could not pass up. It now sits in my Tiki inspired bedroom waiting for me to fill it up. I have early 60’s Lane Acclaim bedroom furniture and I think it looks great with those pieces.

Check back soon to see the new mid mod front door we have installed.

As soon as it is painted I will be posting photos. Still deciding on color: aqua or mint green?

Retro Holidays 2016

Standard

Not much changed this year in my Christmas decor. I only found a few new things that “made the cut”. Trying to keep it simple (the struggle is real) has made me much more selective.

Of course there were a few exceptions!

This pretty Christmas card box is a new addition in the peach bathroom.

101_5181

So are these sweet angel girls. They are actually candle holders.

101_5088-1

This great new Hallmark ornament is modeled after a split level mid-century home. I think it looks swell in my knotty pine mudroom.

101_5210

Our cozy basement family room was decked out for the season.

101_5135

My rolled gift wrap is corralled in an old shopping cart on wheels.

101_5137

This table is where I do my wrapping and writing cards. It doubles as an extra dining space when we are entertaining. After Christmas it is perfect for puzzles on a cold winter day. The tablecloth was a recent estate sale find as were some of the Santa and snowman mugs in the buffet.

101_5133

Some new albums were added to our collection this year.

101_5125

Here are some of my winter Pyrex in action. I think I was whipping up a hot meal for our oldest who was flying in from Canada for the holidays.

101_5200

These atomic dishes were a Christmas gift from my youngest. I just love this pattern; it looks great against my counter tops.

101_5240-1

I got these great books from my Toronto boy. The Mid-Century Ads is a gem and chock full of colorful advertising on every single page.

101_5101

Until next time, I hope you are enjoying these slower paced winter days.

We have a few projects planned for the next few months;  be sure to check back.

End of the Year Kitschmas Deals

Standard

I hope everyone is having a Happy New Year and recovering from all the planning, shopping, baking, hosting, eating, crafting, wrapping, shipping, decorating and travelling. Just typing all that makes me tired.

While my life was a whirlwind of activity those last few months of 2016, I did manage to sneak into the thrift stores a few times. Since I am trying to simplify my life/ home and keep less, only a few things will stay and the rest will either be used for crafting or listed in my Etsy shop.

With shipping costs always increasing and everyone’s budgets getting tighter, bargains are getting hard to come by. I try to hit shops when they are having a clearance or on “special deal” days.

My local Salvation Army Thrift Store marks items down frequently. I was able to get in there the week before Christmas and all of the holiday items were 50% off.

I got this great set of 22 Houze Happy Holiday glasses.

101_5184

And this little set of ornaments made from toothpicks and vintage Christmas cards. They were hidden in a decorative soap box. It pays to dig!

101_5193

This poor Santa card holder was laying among the heaps of messy piles

101_5188-1

I also found ornaments.

101_5186

And more ornaments.

101_5190

Knitted stockings, tile trivets and more Kitschy goodness

101_5187

The day after Christmas yielded another haul.  A small shop in a town nearby advertised that they were having 75% off vintage Christmas. I bought so much that I had to make 2 trips to get it all home. A good problem to have, no?

101_5242

Blow molds, light up wall hangings and 22 boxes of glass ornaments. Yeah, I know.

101_5243

101_5244

Those huge pink ornaments are the biggest I have ever seen. They are as big as grapefruits.

101_5246101_5245

This large cardboard Santa Claus toy chest is just so cool. I am not sure of it’s intended use? Possibly a box to hold “give away toys” that sat next to Santa at a department store or other venue? What ever it is I know I can find a use for it.

101_5247101_5248101_5249

I also purchased this box of unused vintage cards online to send out next year. I just love the sweet graphics and the huge box!

101_5180101_5179

Now I have to find the energy to take down all of my own decor and go though all of this stuff, organize it, pack some away and work on getting what remains listed to sell. Hopefully I will be done in time for next years Christmas shopping season!

I hope you were able to find some deals this season as well.

I will post a few photos of my Christmas decor soon; I did get a few new things.

Happy New Year!
